When rap was young–real young–rappers wore suits. Here’s one of rap’s legendary pioneers, Kurtis Blow, from 1980 doing his Christmas rap, live. Some things to keep in mind as you watch this…
- Again–he’s wearing a suit. A ’70′s herringbone wool affair with a butterfly collar shirt underneath…but a suit, nonetheless.
- You’re soooo used to seeing rappers with wireless mics… you forgot most mics have wires. Still.
- There’s a total absence of the hand gestures you’re used to. Remember: Run DMC’s Raising Hell was still 4 years away.
- He doesn’t move much; seems uncomfortable. You gotta remember: Rapper’s Delight was only a year old. Rap was new. Brand new! So was performing it live.
